Where would be the best place to put the port on my subwoofer?

Question 1
Where would be the best place to put the port on my subwoofer?...  I have two 12s in a 10h x 20w x 17 d box. My subs are facing straight up. I have a jeep cherokee and it has a cargo tarp just inches above the subs... Would it be best to make my ports face up (towards the tarp like the subs) or back towards the liftgate?

Answers
1)   well does your box allready have a port or are you planning on cutting one in???? if it does have one face it up with the subs facing twords the rear! If it doesnt & your plannin on making a port make sure you do it correctly the port should be atleast 3 inch X 3 inch & up and go almost to the bottom of your box about 2 to 3 inch's from the bottom - Jimmie

2)   i would face them towards the back because if you face them up there would be to much noise towards the tarp. or you could make them on the side of the box and individual port for each. - argi

3)   Uhh, have you checked your subwoofer's specifications. This is an important step. Different sizes, models, and brands of subwoofers have different operating environment parameters, requiring different diameters and lengths of port tubes for optimal operation. Your subwoofer's manual will have the relevant specifications for the size and length of port tube you need.

ported box need to be bigger to work property, if you still want to make it ported, i say back towards that liftgate, the port and your subwoofers are going to make your tarp move and noise , i preffer to listen to clean bass - Jen

4)   To answer you question, If it were me I would face the port to the rear but that box is only 1.9 cubic feet ; probably not big enough to put a port in it. - Moley

5)   Hey thus is me again (couldnt remember the stupid email i had to use)

I have the jbl gt5 12. Im going by the 1.75 ft cub recomennded by my manual . http://manuals.harman.com/JBL/CAR/Boxes%20and%20Parameters/GT512Tech_050108.pdf

How ever, my port is not that large. it is http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_11617_House+Brand+AIRPORTM.html - greenneck

3)   yes you can wont harm the amp or the sub it will just be less power if the sub is a dual voice coil you might want to parrallel the one sub to the amp more power and you wont have to have your amp up all the way - jose h

Question 3
Sub and amp???????????...  I'm getting a 300 watt kicker sub and a 600 watt 4 channel amp to wire up the sub and rear speakers. Is that too much power coming from the amp?

Answers
1)   am not a car audio expert ,but if your amp is rms 600 watts = 4 channel X 100watts, is to think is safe we your rms 300 watts subs , most stock car speakers are 10-30 watts, if you got aftermarket speakers anything 100watt ++ should be safe, - Jen

2)   Never too much - Moley

3)   Well first off you should have included which size sub you have but yes you'll be fine your sub alone could handle your amp.I suggest getting a seperate amp for the sub thou go with a 2-channel bridgable amp

600--800 watts & put that sub in a good ported box kicker subs love ported boxes - Jimmie

Question 4
how can i maximize my spl?...  1997 acura integra

optima yellow-top battery

4ga big 3

4ga power cable

power acoustik 2600watt amp

it states 540rms at 2ohms i have the subs wired at that

2 12inch kicker l7s

custom box 4cubic feet tuned to 32htz

how can i make it louder more spl

capcell? upgrade power cable? kicker zx1500?

Answers
1)   id say your power cable is good enough.

It might be the quality of your box. Sealed or ported would make a big difference. Some people say poly fill works wonders too. - greenneck

2)   power acoustik amplifiers only make 50% to 60% of their rated power so the amplifier is where i would start. - dragon breath

3)   Don't put polyfill in your box it will mess with your tuning frequency.

You have all this nice stuff but your amp is wimpy. Do yourself a favour and get an amp that will produce some power like the kicker zx1500.1 that you mentioned. You need to put some power into those l7's. You allready have big 3, good wire and battery so a capcell won't do squat. - Moley

Question 5
New headunit for my friend?...  My friend is stuck on either getting a pioneer or kenwood headunit. I said get a pioneer because thats what i use(Pioneer DEH-P4100UB) and it works flawlessly. The problem with pioneer is that its more exspensive. For the most part at least. So it seems his search is down to a Pioneer DEH-P5100UB, or a Kenwood KDC-HD545U..

There is a cheaper version of the pioneer but my friend doesnt like the way it looks so idk?Pioneer DEH-P4200UB

Please help me answer this question. Which is better(reliable/sound quality/preamp quality?/user friendly)? Hopefully Pioneer is the victor so my advice looks good...

Answers
1)   Personally I love Alpine, but of those two I guess I would go with Pioneer. - Jeremy

2)   Id go with the pioneer, that thing looks sick. Im just no too thrilled with kenwood. I had a pioneer in my old car and it worked great. Now, i have a sony, and i love it. - Cannabliss
